PLASSEY HOLIDAY PARK in Wrexham, North Wales, has been named by the AA as the UK’s top destination for campers, glampers, caravanners and motorhome owners.

The family business beat thousands of other eligible parks to take both the Wales and the overall British Campsite of the Year title in the AA’s 2019/20 Caravan and Camping Awards.

Awards given by the AA – based on guest reviews and a “secret shopper” visit by inspectors – are regarded as the Oscars of the holiday parks industry.

The park’s facilities, services and levels of hospitality all went under the microscope – and each was found to meet or exceed the platinum standard on every level.

The park’s owners, John Brookshaw and his wife Sarah, say they were “absolutely overwhelmed” when news came through that they had clinched two major honours:

Plassey’s Shippon Restaurant also drew praise from the AA inspection team

“This has to be one of our family’s proudest moments since we first started welcoming visitors to Plassey over fifty years ago,” said John.

“What makes these AA awards particularly special to us is that they are based not just on our quality standards, but the experience which guests enjoy.

“Providing happy holidays has always been our family’s main priority, and our friendly and helpful team deserve a big vote of thanks for helping us deliver this,” he added.

The citation from the AA’s award judges noted that Plassey “is a truly lovely park set in several hundred acres of quiet farm and meadowland in the beautiful Dee Valley. There is so much here to entertain all age groups and to create lovely holiday memories, from a swimming pool to free fishing and use of the golf course.”

Inspectors also highlighted the first-class amenities, the acclaimed Shippon Restaurant, and the artisan craft village on the park which is home to 20 Wales-based retailers.

They went on to praise Plassey’s super-luxury glamping facilities which include lodges with private hot tubs and views over the park’s 250 acres of well-kept grounds.

Not that Plassey is any stranger to awards, and its other recent honours include the title of Best Go Caravan, Camping & Glamping site for all of North Wales from Go North Wales Tourism.

In addition, botanist David Bellamy presented Plassey this autumn with his top award for environmental care, and it is also a member of the Best of British group of top-rated UK parks.

John Brookshaw said: “The new AA awards have provided an amazing finish to the 2019 season, and I hope they also help spotlight North Wales generally as a fantastic holiday destination.”
