The gift of time: how holiday park owners can help our Armed Forces families heal

In this article Alex Youngs, operations director of the charity Give Us Time, explains how parks donating holiday stays can help military families reconnect with one another

For many of us, a holiday means relaxation — a chance to unwind and reconnect with loved ones. But for military families, especially those touched by deployment, injury, or loss, that kind of time together can feel out of reach. That’s where the charity Give Us Time comes in.

Founded in 2012, Give Us Time was created to support the families of personnel returning from the major conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The charity takes donated accommodation from generous holiday homeowners, hotels, and holiday parks, and matches them with military families in need of rest, recovery, and reconnection.

Over the years, their mission has grown. Today, Give Us Time supports all serving, veteran, and bereaved families from all three branches of the UK Armed Forces. They also offer day trips and unique experiences to help families make new memories together — something that can mean the world after years of separation and sacrifice.

Since 2020, more than 1,000 families have enjoyed precious time together on breaks and days out across the UK, Europe, and even the United States. Most of these holidays take place during off-peak or out-of-season periods, ensuring that holiday parks and hotels can continue focusing on paying guests while still making a difference. In fact, 97% of all donated breaks were used last year, proving just how vital — and valued — these contributions are.

The impact is profound. One family described their donated stay as “more than just a holiday — it’s the gift of time and togetherness.” Another said, “Make the most of the people you have now, of the time you have now. Time is so precious.”

That message has never felt more urgent. This year alone, Give Us Time saw a 112% increase in families seeking breaks due to mental health challenges, showing the strain on our armed forces families.

As we mark Remembrance Week, Give Us Time is reaching out to holiday property owners across the country. If you have spare capacity — perhaps an unbooked week or an off-season cottage — you can make an extraordinary difference.

Your property could become a place of healing, connection, and hope. For those who serve — and those who wait for them — that time together is priceless. To learn more or to donate a stay, visit giveustime.org.uk or email enquiries@giveustime.org.uk.
